**Room occupancy** is the second scale, independent of readiness. It answers
whether there is a guest in the room, not whether the next one can be let in.

Two scales are needed because their states combine freely. A room can be
occupied and blocked at once: the guest is living there and the tap does not
work. It can be free and not ready. It can be free and ready — which is the
room that can be sold today.

Occupancy is derived from the stays attached to the room. A guest who has not
checked out outranks the calendar's arithmetic: by the dates the stay is
already reads ‘Leaving today’, and in fact the room is occupied, and
that is how the calendar shows it.

The words of the two scales deliberately do not overlap — otherwise they would
read as one.
